Lessons

Teaching is our core activity

We offer tuition in all standard instruments, singing and in the theory of music. The majority of our teaching is ‘one-to-one’ but shared lessons are available where appropriate.

Our standard package offers 12 ½-hour weekly lessons per term but this can be adjusted to suit your needs: 20 minute lessons are often more appropriate for the youngest students whilst adults may prefer longer lessons at less frequent intervals.

Every student is offered a free ½-hour ‘taster’ lesson. Contact us to discuss the best plan for you.

Knowledge of the theory of music aids learning and is also a requirement for candidates wishing to sit Associated Board practical exams at Grade 6 and above. One-to-one theory lessons are available under the normal terms or less formal guided sessions are sometimes available at a reduced charge.

We are happy to teach students at all levels and of all ages – many of our current students are adults, some coming to us as beginners, others picking up the musical threads where they left off many years ago. We also teach a wide variety of musical styles.

Lessons usually take place on our premises in Blandford and many of our teachers are able to offer daytime as well as evening appointments.

We are happy to prepare candidates for exams – we are the local centre for Associated Board exams and several members of our staff are examiners themselves. But we also recognise that some students prefer just to play for pleasure. Regular informal student concerts are held.
Many of our staff are active performers as well as teachers. All are fully qualified and carry  Disclosure & Barring Service (previously CRB) clearance.

We have a large stock of string and woodwind instruments available for hire.

“Well into retirement and with no previous musical training I started piano lessons at DRMS. Learning an instrument is fun – it’s never too late to learn.”
(Janette from Blandford)

“I earned really useful UCAS points with my Grade 8 exam – and the lessons were fun too!”
(Holly from Sturminster Newton)
